(Catatan: Iseng saja, ini teks dari blog saya di Opinion Counts).
Perhaps, one of the most catchy and eloquent inventions of modern phrases is disclaimer. The origin is France, so I read. But, what is it really, anyway? You said something and then disclaim it?
The fact is, this is indeed a rather contradictory expression. The world as we know now is commonly understood as the place of human living in or even faithfully practicing greed. It is about claiming more. People strive so hard bone to bone for just that.
Each of us must have personal experiences crossing path with ambition-prone individuals. Some of them might have been more than eager to make any claim there is, even if of others. If not, how can we explain every bit of the corrupt society we are struggling in?
But, perhaps, that is also the finesse of humanity, that a balance has always to be made. We get the right and the wrong; the right and the left; the right and the obligation. You can name them all; the two-thing-in-pair natural fact of life.
Thus, here we are now: we can claim or disclaim.
Of course the essence of a disclaimer is its escaping character. It is an exit door. By this, I mean the character that if something is indeed wrong, you can disown it and not to be asked responsible for the wrong.
Nevertheless, the ethic is, if there is one, a disclaimer is a pre-expressed terms of use. True, this is a legal jargon and a very lengthy text or exposition can relate to it. Yet, in its day-to-day sense, you cannot overstretch a disclaimer too much in such an irresponsible way. Or else, you will simply lose credibility. Lying is nothing to do with disclaimer.
My disclaimer: this is solely a personal opinion reflecting none of any institution or affiliation I am a member of.
